The hot and humid air moving through Manitoba brought some intense thunderstorms overnight Friday, and the weather systems aren't done yet.

"We had pretty strong wind gusts [last night]," says Dan Fulton, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (EC). "The highest I saw was 115 km/h, but there were quite a few stations that reported over the 90-115 km/h range."

The areas of Manitoba that saw the most precipitation and winds were the southern areas near the U.S.A. border from west to east.

"We also got quite heavy downpours. Some places were receiving up to 25 mm of rain in an hour, which I'm sure caused some localized flooding. They were quite intense."

The heat warning from EC is continuing for Winnipeg and southern Manitoba throughout Friday.

"Today, for the city of Winnipeg, there are some showers approaching from the southwest. They will probably hold together long enough to reach the city. We're looking at a pretty good chance of showers this morning, and there might be a thunderstorm in there too."

Later in the morning and into the early afternoon, the temperature is set to rise to 31 degrees Celsius, with a humidex of 40.

"That heat and humidity again building up will trigger another chance of thunderstorms late this afternoon into early this evening. After that round, a cold front moves through tonight. That should bring us back to much more comfortable weather for the weekend."

Saturday's high in the afternoon is 25 degrees, the normal seasonal temperature this time of year for Manitoba.
