The annual Decor Charity Classic Golf Tournament is returning for its 22nd year on August 7, at Minnewasta Golf & Country Club. Hosted by Decor Cabinets, the highly anticipated event is a longstanding commitment to supporting vital community organizations through business support.
The tournament has become one of the region’s most impactful charity fundraisers, raising close to $1.7 million since it began in 2002. This year, it will once again bring together 150 golfers, including suppliers from across Canada and the U.S., to raise funds for four charitable organizations: Youth for Christ Morden, Pembina Counselling Centre, Pregnancy Care Centre, and a new addition for 2024, Crossroads.
A 22 year journey of giving
Chief Financial Officer of Decor Cabinets, Dave Schellenberg, has been involved since day one. “This will actually be our 22nd year coming up,” he shared. “I still remember at one of our first management meetings… the owner at the time, Larry, asked if anybody wanted to run a golf tournament. I didn’t say anything at first being the new guy… but I loved golf, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”
"We’ve raised just under $1.7 million through the tournament." - Dave Schellenberg, Chief Financial Officer of Decor Cabinets
Since its inception, the tournament has consistently supported three local organizations like YFC Morden, Pembina Counselling Centre, and the Pregnancy Care Centre in order to reflect Decor’s belief in supporting people at every stage of life. “From pregnancy at the beginning, through to being a youth, to as you get older and may need help with counselling… we’ve really valued those charities for helping the local community at any stage of life,” Schellenberg said.
Growth over the years
About ten years ago, as the tournament grew, organizers decided to include a fourth charity chosen annually by Decor’s owners. This year, Stan and Connie Pauls selected Crossroads, best known for producing 100 Huntley Street. “They’re involved with 24/7 prayer support, Bible study materials, and fundraising for natural disasters around the world,” said Schellenberg. “It’s a very valuable ministry doing lots of good things.”
Contributions matched by Decor
While the tournament is now at capacity with 150 registered golfers, fundraising efforts are still ongoing. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to donate or become sponsors — contributions that will go even further thanks to Decor Cabinets’ pledge to match 50% of the total net proceeds.
“Even though we're pretty full on the golfer side, you can still donate,” Schellenberg said. “The great thing about it is that Decor matches 50% of the net proceeds… so if you put in some money, it’s going to get matched.”
Making an impact
The Charity Classic has grown year after year, raising an average of $110,000 annually in recent years. “Dividing it four ways, that’s roughly $27,000 to $28,000 per charity,” said Schellenberg, noting the generous support of the community and suppliers who travel from as far away as Quebec, B.C., and the United States.
The event is about creating an enjoyable, memorable experience. With themed holes, fun games, and unique challenges throughout the course, organizers aim to ensure players have as much fun as they do purpose. “The golf is just the excuse really to get together, have fun, and raise money,” said Schellenberg. “I try each year to allow people to act like kids again between the holes — maybe they’re shooting a water gun or doing something silly. It’s just a chance to have fun.”
Looking ahead
Looking ahead, Schellenberg is hopeful for good weather and continued support. “A huge thank you to everybody who signed up already, including to the local community, our suppliers, our volunteers, and the charities. We’ve been very blessed and fortunate over the last 21 years, and we’re looking forward to many more.”
