Morden community center 500 Stephen hosted a fundraiser Car Show on Saturday, July 5th, taking up the parking lot of the Morden Plaza. Supported by the community and businesses of the plaza, the car show served as an intersection between the community and car enthusiasts.
Funding community spaces and success
Executive director of 500 Stephen Kevin Driedger shared that the community center is “always busy”. With local nonprofits using the space as a meeting and office space, 500 Stephen has become a hub of activity. “If they shine because of use, that’s success for us.” shared Driedger.
Why a car show? Summer marketing and event coordinator Sanjay Naha shared that the reasoning behind a car show was twofold: “I really like cars” Naha said. This is a sentiment often shared by the wider population, Naha reflected. “It’s the community...there’s so many years of work” put into vehicles and events like these.
A blast from the past
Susan and Murray Seymour brought two cars to the show: a 1969 Sport Fury Plymouth, and a 1970 Plymouth Fury. For Murray, car collecting and shows are a way to celebrate his younger years: “We try and take in as many car shows as we can... it reminds us of our youth” shared Murray. “When I finished high school, I worked for Chrysler for quite a few years locally and in Winnipeg... so now I’m back.”

As for why the Seymours came out today? “It’s a great cause” shared Susan. “It helps a lot of people, and it’s great on the organizers for doing a car show.”
Curious about what’s happening at 500 Stephen? Executive director Driedger encourages the community to come out and see, from Monday to Friday. Driedger shares he’s “...glad to make some coffee and have a conversation about what’s going on here, and what new possibilities we could imagine for the future.”
