The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) are searching for a teenage suspect after a man was assaulted with a machete on Thursday.

On July 3, the WPS responded to a call in the 1700 block of Portage Avenue. A man had been attacked by a teen carrying a machete, according to the victim.

The suspect ran away before the West District Police arrived on the scene.

A person in the area helped the victim to control his bleeding by applying a makeshift belt tourniquet. The police took over the first aid once they arrived, and the victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition with serious injuries.

The WPS are continuing to search for the suspect, described as a teenage male between the ages of 15 and 17, 5’6” to 5’10” tall, with a skinny build, light complexion, and shaggy dark hair. He was wearing a black Tupac t-shirt, torn black jeans, dark sandals with white or grey socks, and carrying a grey backpack.

It is believed two other teenagers were accompanying the suspect, who are also in question.

The Major Crimes Unit (MCU) has taken over the investigation and is asking anyone with information about the assault or the suspect to come forward. Tips can be provided by calling MCU at 204-986-6219 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
