Sixteen-year-old Camden Suchan is gearing up for another incredibly busy summer of baseball. Not only is the pitcher and third base player currently busy with her home team, the East Central 15U AAA Dodgers, but she has a role to play on three different Team Sask squads as each gears up for national competitions.
Suchan, a Grade 11 student in the fall, has earned roster spots with Team Sask’s 16U, 19U, and senior women’s squad, showcasing her rising talent in women’s baseball. Despite technically being overage for the 15U boys’ league, current Baseball Canada rules allow girls to "play down" one age group, giving her another year of experience in high-level boys’ baseball.
“It’s helped me a lot, especially with pitching against faster hitters,” she explained. “It pushes me to be better.”
For the first time, girls' 16U baseball will be featured at the Canada Summer Games. Suchan will be part of the Team Sask 16U squad competing in Newfoundland this August.
“I’m excited to be part of it,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for exposure and to play against provinces like Quebec, Ontario, and B.C., who always bring strong teams.”
Suchan’s summer kicks off with the 19U national championship in Calgary from July 31 to August 4. Her attendance depends on how the Dodgers perform heading into provincials.
“If we (the Dodgers) land in Tier 2, I’ll go with the 19U team. If it’s Tier 1, I’ll stay with the Dodgers,” she explained.
Immediately following that tournament, she’ll head east for the senior women’s nationals in Quebec City, beginning August 5.
Balancing three provincial teams and her club squad requires dedication.
“We train almost every weekend,” she said. “Some days, it’s five hours of practic, three in the morning and two more in the afternoon.”
Suchan trains in Saskatoon through the winter, including sessions at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex. In March, she traveled to Florida for a spring training camp with Team Sask and scrimmaged against Quebec’s provincial team.
“We were pretty evenly matched,” she said. “And when we played Manitoba in May, we beat them pretty well. It was a confidence boost heading into nationals.”
A versatile athlete, Suchan is primarily a pitcher but also plays third base. Her work with the Dodgers, along with her own dedicated practice regimen, has seen her confidence boosted when it comes to fielding
Suchan is also sharpening her hitting, adjusting to vastly different pitching speeds between male and female opponents.
“The speed difference is big,” she said. “Playing against the boys helps me time up faster pitchers, and I’ve been working on that bat speed.”
Though her summer will leave little time for rest, Suchan is embracing the moment before it’s back to classes in September.
“I’m excited because there’ll be Team Canada scouts watching,” she said. “Getting seen at three different events is huge. I might not play as much on the older teams, but I’ll be ready to contribute however I can - pitching, third base, even outfield if they need it.”
With talent, work ethic, and a full calendar of opportunity, Camden Suchan is one of Saskatchewan’s top young prospects aiming to make her mark on the national stage.
