Mountain View County will receive $205,073.59 from the Government of Alberta to support lighting system upgrades at the Sundre Airport (CFN7), restoring night-use capability to the facility.
On June 30, the County announced a successful grant application through the province’s Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP). The County will receive $205,073.59 in provincial funding toward the $275,000 project, with the remaining costs to be funded by Mountain View County.
The upgrades will replace the airport’s current lighting system — parts of which date back to 1947 — with a modern LED solution that improves safety, reduces energy consumption, and restores night-use capabilities to the facility.
The existing system is inoperable, with a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) in place indicating lighting is unavailable. As a result, the airport cannot currently accommodate night flying or operations in low-visibility conditions.
Alongside improved safety and general facility enhancements, the county stated that the new system is expected to reduce the airport’s environmental footprint and long-term operational costs.
“The Sundre Airport plays an important role in supporting our regional economy, recreational opportunities, and emergency response services,” said Reeve Angela Aalbers. “These upgrades ensure the airport remains operational, safe, and attractive to users from across Alberta and beyond.”
The Sundre Airport supports a wide range of users, including flight schools, private aviators, emergency services, and aviation businesses, and serves as a key access point to Alberta’s West Country.
The County said that with new hangar lots recently subdivided and ongoing investment in the site’s infrastructure, it remains committed to maintaining the airport as a key component of its economic development strategy.
“Mountain View County thanks Minister Jason Nixon and the Government of Alberta for their continued support of rural infrastructure and their investment in long-term, community-based economic growth,” the County stated.
