Winkler Police recovered a stolen vehicle on June 19 after receiving a report from a British Columbia rental company indicating one of their cars had been taken past the agreed-upon rental period and was now in Winkler.

According to the police report, officers located the vehicle and arrested the driver for Theft of a Motor Vehicle. The individual was released on an Appearance Notice.

Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt explained how the case unfolded:

"So initially the car rental company had reported it to their local police in BC, and they notified us that the vehicle was in Winkler," He said, “They could track it (with) GPS, so they notified us that it was in Winkler and they gave us an address."

Hunt said officers responded to the provided location to find a male sitting inside the vehicle.

"So he was charged with theft of a motor vehicle. And the vehicle was impounded."

Hunt noted the individual had initially rented the vehicle in British Columbia but had exceeded the rental terms.

As for the vehicle itself, Hunt says it will be up to the rental company to retrieve it.
