Red Deer residents can expect sidewalk and parking closures soon as demolition of the Empire Building at 4909 48 Street gets underway.

The work was originally scheduled for late June but was delayed after crews discovered one of the building’s walls was connected to an adjacent structure. Remediation is now planned for July 7 and 8, with demolition scheduled from July 9 to 13. Cleanup and site restoration will continue afterward.

To ensure safety, sidewalks and on-street parking beside 4907 and 4909 48 Street will be closed from July 9 to 14. The south alley behind the building will be closed to through traffic from July 9 to 21, though access to nearby parking lots will remain open.

The city is reminding the public to avoid the area. The site will be fenced and secured, with after-hours security in place.

The Empire Building was destroyed by fire in October 2021.
