A golf course near Rimbey and Bentley is continuing its long-standing commitment to young athletes through its Junior Golf Foundation.
The Gull Lake Golf Course will host its 19th annual Pro-Am tournament the weekend of July 19 and 20, with proceeds supporting scholarships for their former or current junior golfers. The event began nearly 20 years ago, inspired by Alberta Open pros visiting the course and playing with local youth after competing at Wolf Creek.
Eamon McCann, owner of Gull Lake Golf Course, said he’s proud of what the foundation has accomplished.
“The last 18 years we've given back over $120,000 to our junior participants,” said McCann. “Today it is amazing how many people are coming in here to offer something for the program.”
Scholarships are awarded annually to past or current members of the Gull Lake Junior Golf League, with the number and amounts determined by a scholarship committee. In 2024, nine scholarships of $1,500 each were awarded, totalling $13,500.
McCann says many former recipients continue to support the program even after moving on.
“Some of these children are now in other professions, and they're coming here and writing a check back to this foundation and that tells you what kind of a program this really is,” said McCann. “It right hits the heart 100 per cent.”
