It’s a big summer at the Souris Valley Theatre with excitement on stage and behind the scenes. With two parody-packed musicals and a full lineup of drama camps for kids, there’s something for everyone this season at Woodlawn Regional Park.

Audiences can expect plenty of laughs and catchy tunes with YellowStone – A Wild West Musical, running in July, and Golden Girls Vacation, which takes over the stage in August. But the spotlight isn’t just for the pros — young performers will also get their time to shine thanks to the Melodye Pierson Youth Summer Drama Camps.

“For the week camps in July, they'll be putting on a performance every Friday,” explained Tienna, the camp coordinator. “And also, throughout the week, they're going to be doing a lot of theatre games and a lot of crafts as well.”

Summer productions deliver music, nostalgia, and even sci-fi

SUN 102 Host Daniel Espelien stopped by the Souris Valley Theatre to speak with Director Brad Wiebe and Stage Manager Hope Van Vliet about this season’s productions.

The lineup features two parody musicals written by Randy Apostle, a Saskatchewan native. YellowStone takes a comedic, musical spin on the modern western, while Golden Girls Vacation brings a new adventure to the classic TV favourites. The cast is made up entirely of Canadian performers, many with roots in Saskatchewan.

  • YellowStone – A Wild West Musical runs July 7 to 11 and July 14 to 18, with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on July 10.
  • Golden Girls Vacation runs August 4 to 8 and August 11 to 15, with a matinee on August 7 at 2:00 p.m.

Meodye Pierson Drama Camps inspire young performers

Daniel also spoke with Drama Camp Director Iciss and Camp Coordinator Tienna, who are leading this year’s Melodye Pierson Youth Summer Drama Camps at the theatre.

The camps welcome kids ages 6 and up, with both week-long and daily drop-in options. Each program includes character creation, theatre games, creative exercises, and a final performance for friends and family.
