Initially approved by City Council back in April of this year, the second phase of the City's 'Safe Routes Project' saw playgrounds across Moose Jaw join school zones in reducing speeds to 30 kilometres an hour between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Work to install signage indicating the reduced speeds began in the latter half of May with the Kiwaniland Park playground, and the project has recently wrapped up.
The new speed limit is in effect in 18 playground zones in the city, and motorists will need to slow down, or potentially face hefty fines or demerit points. Nine sports fields, green spaces and four schools on South Hill (which have since closed) will not see their speed limits adjusted and are only receiving new 'playground ahead' warning signs.
The completion of the Safe Routes project is part of the larger goal of aligning Moose Jaw with national standards set by the Transportation Association of Canada
