The annual Senior Slo-pitch Tournament is in full swing at Republic of Manitobah Park in Portage la Prairie, with nine teams taking the field over two days of friendly but spirited competition.

Games began Tuesday, with players returning Wednesday to wrap up the tournament. The event features multiple divisions and draws slo-pitch enthusiasts from across the region.

Coach Robinson says the tournament has become a yearly tradition that continues to bring players together.

“We host the tournament every year and try to get as many teams out,” notes Robinson. “There’s three divisions; two rec divisions and one competitive division.”

Participation slipping but enthusiasm remains strong

While teams continue to show up and enjoy the game, Robinson points out that participation across the league is showing signs of decline.

“We’re starting to lose teams throughout the league,” she says. “There’s a lot of players fading away from the league.”

Even with fewer players than in past years, the tournament atmosphere remains upbeat, and the love for the game is still front and centre.

Everyone’s in it for the fun

For Robinson, the tournament is more about connection and enjoyment than the final score.

“Everyone’s having fun,” he adds. “That’s the main reason we’re here.”

The games span across various divisions, offering options for players looking for either a competitive or more laid-back experience. It’s an opportunity for seniors to stay active, social, and involved with a sport many have played for years.
