Winnipeg police arrested two men after community tips alleged that drug dealers were targeting areas near temporary evacuee residences.
On July 6, members of the West District Community Support Unit observed several suspected drug transactions involving occupants of a vehicle in the 1700 block of Wellington Avenue, close to evacuation sites.
At approximately 9:25 p.m., officers stopped the vehicle nearby on Sargent Avenue, arresting the driver and seizing three grams of cocaine, $820 cash, and a drug-related cellphone.
Farhan Hassan Arab, 18, faces charges including trafficking cocaine, possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000, and breaching an undertaking. Arab remains in custody.
Caue Ramos Martins, 21, identified as a passenger during the drug transactions, has been charged with trafficking cocaine and possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000. Martins was released on an undertaking.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
The Winnipeg Police Service says evacuees are facing challenging circumstances and emphasized their commitment to maintaining safety and support. Police say that liaison teams continue visiting evacuation centres, coordinating with NGOs and community organizations to assist displaced residents.
Anyone witnessing suspicious activities or crimes in progress is urged to contact emergency services at 911. Non-emergencies can be reported by calling 204-986-6222 or through the Winnipeg Police Service online reporting system.
