A new playground is coming this fall to Lacombe, but it isn’t going to be at a local school.

The Lacombe Fish and Game Association (LFGA) is adding a new playground to the popular community fishing site, with installation scheduled for September. The addition will expand the existing play space at the pond and feature a honeybee and hive theme.

“There are some kinds of woodland playgrounds, and then there's this kind of bees themed playground,” said LFGA president Brad Pallister.

“We just thought that bees are incredibly important for conservation.”

The playground is being manufactured by a company based in Medicine Hat and is designed to support the association’s long-term goal of engaging young visitors in outdoor, conservation-focused experiences.

“The longer that you can keep kids engaged in a conservation related facility, the higher chance of their success and the higher chance that you recruit a lifelong conservationist,” Pallister said.

The project is considered the final step in a series of major improvements LFGA has made to the pond over the past decade.

“Years before, it was just a stormwater pond with some fish in it,” said Pallister.

“And since then, there's been parking lots, a bunch of trees have been added, a gazebo, the world's largest lure, some landscaping, and a bunch of docks, including the big, accessible dock.”

The playground project is primarily funded by LFGA, with support from corporate sponsors, community grants, and proceeds from the association’s 2024 spring fundraising dinner.

More information about the pond is on the Lacombe Fish and Game Association’s website.
