Vulcan County and parts of Foothills County are currently under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Environment Canada issued the severe thunderstorm watch, because conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms which could be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, rain, or large hail.

The watch is issued for:

  •    Foothills Co. near Blackie, Alta. (072620)
  •    Siksika Res. 146, Alta. (072633)
  •    Vulcan Co. near Arrowwood Herronton and Queenstown, Alta. (072641)
  •    Vulcan Co. near Vulcan and Ensign, Alta. (072642)
  •    Vulcan Co. near Carmangay and Champion, Alta. (072643)
  •    Vulcan Co. near Lomond Travers and Little Bow Reservoirs, Alta. (072644)
  •    Vulcan Co. near Milo, Alta. (072645)

The thunderstorms will begin to develop in west-central Alberta, and will move to the east throughout the day.

Some of those thunderstorms could become severe in the afternoon.

On top of the thunderstorms expecting to be moving fast, likely over 60 km/hr, there is also a very slight risk of a tornado touching down.

Environment Canada is reminding people that if thunder roars, head indoors, as lighting kills and injures Canadians every year.
