The Weyburn Beavers came out swinging Wednesday night in Medicine Hat, but their bats weren’t enough to keep up with the Mavericks in an 11-8 loss.
The two teams combined for 28 hits and 19 runs in a back-and-forth affair that saw Medicine Hat score four runs in the bottom of the eighth to go from a one-run deficit to a three-run lead. Weyburn had built an early lead with two runs in the second and three more in the third, but the Mavericks chipped away before pulling ahead late.
Center fielder Chett McDaniel had a strong night at the plate for Weyburn, going 2-for-5 with a two-run home run. Ian Heck added three hits and drove in two runs, while shortstop Trevor Dale and first baseman Brayden Mayencourt each had two hits and an RBI. In total, the Beavers racked up 14 hits on the night.
On the mound, Weyburn cycled through four pitchers. Starter Isaiah Granado allowed two runs over three innings, while relievers Ryan Meyer and Connor Nipp each gave up three runs in their stints. Logan Kinter took the loss, surrendering four runs, two earned, in the eighth.
The Mavericks matched Weyburn with 14 hits, highlighted by a 3-for-5 night from leadoff man Jeremy Freeman Jr., who doubled, homered, and drove in three runs. Blake Dale and Carter Roth also hit home runs for Medicine Hat.
With the loss, the Beavers are now five games back of the Moose Jaw Miller Express for the final playoff spot in the WCBL’s East Division. They’ll look to rebound Thursday night as they return home to Tom Laing Park to face the Saskatoon Berries on Pack the Park Night. The night will include a number of fan activities, deals on food and beverages, and Blue Jays Central host Jamie Campbell will be in attendance. The game starts just after 7 p.m.
