The Humboldt Golf Club is preparing to host one of the most significant amateur golf events in Saskatchewan this summer, as 156 of the province’s top golfers descend on the city from July 15 to 17, with a final playoff round on July 18.
“This is a really big event for us at HGC,” said Dave Hill, Vice-President of the Humboldt Golf Club. “We’ll have 156 of the best golfers in the province competing in the provincial championships here.”
The tournament will bring together four major competitions in one venue: the Men’s Amateur, Men’s Mid-Amateur, Ladies’ Amateur, and Ladies’ Mid-Amateur categories. The top 20 entries in the Men’s Amateur will advance to a final round playoff on Friday, June 18.
According to Hill, the caliber of players attending is among the highest in Saskatchewan.
“To use an analogy for our curling friends, this is like the provincial Brier for our golfing community,” he said. “Champions from here are eligible to go on to the Canadian championships, all under the Golf Canada umbrella.”
To qualify, participants must meet strict handicap requirements.
“On the men’s amateur side, handicaps must be below five. Mid-amateur players must be in the single digits, up to 10, and ladies must be below 15,” Hill explained. “These are some fine golfers—you’re not going to see better amateur golf anywhere in our province.”
As the tournament draws near, Hill noted that community involvement is still welcome.
“We’ve already had a great response from volunteers, but we’re looking for a few more, especially for hole spotting,” he said. Volunteers will be stationed on specific holes, particularly those with dense brush or blind spots, to assist golfers and keep play moving smoothly.
A volunteer orientation will be held Sunday, July 13, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
“They really don’t need any golfing experience,” Hill emphasized. “If they’re interested, we’d love to have them.”
A sign-up link will be available on both the Humboldt Golf Club website and local media partner pages. Follow this link to volunteer. Spectators are also encouraged to attend.
“We’re setting up grandstands behind the 18th green, which will be a great spot to see some of the top players finishing their rounds,” Hill said. “There are also designated viewing spots throughout the course, and volunteers will guide spectators, so they don’t interfere with play.”
Hill says hosting such a prestigious event is a major milestone for the Humboldt Golf Club. “It gives us a chance to showcase our course to the rest of the province,” Hill said. “We know locally that we’ve got a really fine golf course, and having top-tier players go back to their home clubs saying ‘Humboldt’s the place to be’ - that’s going to be great.”
The Humboldt Golf Club, long recognized regionally for its quality and community support, now stands ready to make a lasting impression on the provincial golf scene.
