July 3 Storm Damages Crops

An intense storm on July 3 brought large hailstones, strong winds, and heavy rain that resulted in substantial crop losses, according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association (CCHA).

CCHA member companies are investigating 1,247 claims of crop damage that occurred June 29-July 5. Some areas saw significant damage from the storms.

“There were pockets of large hail, with some farmers reporting up to golf ball-size,” said Brendan Blight, Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation

But, with the storms, comes welcome rain that is needed in many areas.

“Crops are advancing nicely with the moisture and heat we’ve been having,” said Brian Bernauer, Rain and Hail Insurance Services.

Companies contributing to this report are Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance, Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation, Rain and Hail Insurance Services, Co-operative Hail Insurance Company, and Palliser Insurance.
