Weyburn City Council will be holding their regular meeting in council chambers tonight at 6 p.m.

They’ll be looking over a few reports, including the building and demolition permit report, the public works monthly report, and the water treatment plant report.

From there, council members will make a motion regarding a reallocation of funds for the Weyburn Police Service. The request is to reallocate up to $60,000 originally designated for the Next Generation 911 (NG911) program for use in purchasing new tasers and biometric equipment. These items were originally removed from the 2025 budget.

The request submitted by Police Chief Brent VanDeSype specifies this will not impact NG911 funding at this time, as the provincial rollout of the program is not expected until next year and requires no immediate expenditures.

From there they will move on to address a culvert failure located under Highway 39 posing a large risk to the structural integrity of both the highway and city roadway. This is proposed to be fixed through a partnership with the Ministry of Highways, who would coordinate the design, tendering, and construction. The total cost of the project will be $809,000 with the city responsible for $600,000, this would be paid in the 2026 fiscal year and need to be pre-approved for next year's budget.

Council will then vote on proposals received for the resurfacing at Elks Park; the recommended offer is over budget and would require a budget increase of $6,745.00.

They will also approve a proposal for work being done at the former site of Haig School. The location is planned to be the future site of the Young Fellows Park which will include amenities like a pump track, multipurpose sport court, washrooms, parking lot, irrigation, and more.

The area where the school was demolished still has large debris under the surface that will need to be removed prior to the construction of the new park. One proposal will be reviewed and is recommended to be approved at the meeting tonight.

Finally, council will review the special occasion liquor permit application from the Weyburn Red Wings, for their home opener event on September 19th. It will include the temporary closure of Mergens Street in front of Crescent Point Place, food trucks housed within the closed-off area, outdoor alcohol sales, and the offering of family-friendly activities like games for children.

We will have full coverage of the meeting, on-air and online, starting tomorrow morning.
