The City of Estevan says a seasonal algae bloom is behind the recent earthy or musty taste and smell reported in the local drinking water supply.
The issue, which is common during prolonged periods of hot weather, is caused by naturally occurring compounds released by algae in the source water. While the odour may be noticeable to some residents, the City says the water remains safe to drink and meets all provincial and national standards.
To help speed up the clearing process, the Water Treatment Plant has opened its flushing line to increase water movement through the system. According to the City, this method helps break up the bloom and promotes faster turnover of the affected water.
In a statement, the City said staff are closely monitoring water quality and taking proactive steps to address the issue. There is no timeline yet for when the water’s taste and smell will return to normal.
