The SJHL named their players of the week Tuesday afternoon, and the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings saw three players get recognized for their efforts on the road trip to Melfort and Flin Flon on the weekend.
Forward Beau Larson was named the SJHL’s Forward of the week. Over the course of the three games, Larson notched six points, two goals and four assists. The Val Marie native, who has been described by some fans as having golden retriever energy for his dogged pursuit of the puck on the forecheck, was acquired by the Wings in a trade with La Ronge earlier this season. He has 12 points, four goals and eight assists, in 14 games this year.
The runner-up for the forward of the week was Kirk Mullen. Mullen also put up six points during the road trip, scoring a goal against Melfort, and then adding five assists in the two games against Flin Flon. Mullen was acquired by the Wings from the Blackfalds Bulldogs from the AJHL.
In addition to being named runner-up for Forward of the Week, Mullen was also named the runner-up for Rookie of the Week, behind Ty Hilbig of the Kindersley Klippers, who finished the week scoring a hat trick in the lone game he played.
The third Red Wing who was recognized for his efforts on the road trip was goaltender Boston Gelowitz, who was runner-up for Goaltender of the Week.. Called up from the Regina Capitals of the PJHL just ahead of the road trip, he started two games and saw action in all three match-ups. Gelowitz faced 102 shots over the course of the three games and turned aside 95 of them – a save percentage of 0.931. He also recorded his first-ever win in the SJHL Friday night against Flin Flon.
