Red Deer RCMP are warning residents about a fraudulent text message claiming recipients have an unpaid radar ticket.
The message threatens licence suspension, demerit points, and even prosecution if payment is not made by a specific deadline. It includes a link to a fake website and references non-existent legislation.
It also uses language not found in legitimate enforcement communication, including the phrase: “please pay immediately before execution to avoid licence.”
Police are urging the public not to click the link or respond to the message.
RCMP remind residents that legitimate speeding tickets in Alberta are never issued via text message. Traffic fines are only issued in person or by mail, and payments are made through secure government platforms.
Anyone who receives this or a similar message is advised to:
-
Not click any links or reply.
-
Report the message to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
-
Contact local police if they believe they are a victim.
Red Deer residents can call RCMP at 403-406-2200. Victims are also encouraged to contact their financial institution and consider reaching out to Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada to monitor their credit reports.
