The Weyburn Police Service swore a new member into the force on Tuesday, Al Patricio from Regina will be wearing badge number 96 following his graduation from the Saskatchewan Police College.
Originally born in the Philippines before moving to Canada as a child, and having spent time serving with the Sheriff's Office, Chief Brent VanDeSype says he looks forward to what Patricio will bring to the community.
“He brings with him strong work ethic and a clear passion for public service qualities that are vital in this line of work.”
“He's fluent in both English and Tagalog. In a city that's got growing diversity including a strong Filipino presence, that cultural and linguistic connection is more than just an asset. It's a bridge to a stronger relationship, deeper understanding and better service for the people of Weyburn.”
Patricio says working as a police officer has been a lifelong ambition for him and expresses his gratitude to the WPS for the opportunity to serve.
“It's been a lifelong dream, I've been looking at police officers ever since I was a kid, I've always looked at them as leaders and role models in the community. I aspire after college to do the same thing for the City of Weyburn.”
Patricio looks forward to attending police college, understanding the curriculum, and growing his strengths. As well as utilizing his skills and talents to serve the people of Weyburn.
“I'm an advocate for mental health and community engagement and I'm hoping that over time, after college, I can bring these assets to the team here and to the City of Weyburn.”
Chief VanDeSype expresses his confidence in Patricio and what he will bring to the force.
“Policing at its core is about people, it's about public trust, integrity and carrying out your duties in a professional and consistent manner. We believe Patricio would do that and represent our service well."
