Portage Daycare is issuing a call to the community, seeking dedicated individuals to join its Board of Directors, with an urgent need to fill the vital position of Treasurer.

The non-profit organization, operating four sites in the region, emphasizes the critical role a qualified treasurer plays in its governance and future planning, particularly as it eyes expansion.

Melanie McKnight, Chairperson of the Portage Daycare Board, confirms the search is underway following the recent departure of their long-serving treasurer due to personal commitments. The Board aims to nominate a new Treasurer at its upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September.

Treasurer's role key to fiscal health

McKnight stresses that filling the Treasurer position is paramount for the daycare's responsible operation and strategic growth. As a non-profit reliant on government funding, sound financial oversight is non-negotiable.

"Because we are a nonprofit organization, we do need a governing body, and we need each person in their role to be the expert in their field so that we can ensure that we are spending the funds that are allocated from the government in a fiscally responsible manner," McKnight states.

The ideal candidate would bring relevant financial expertise to contribute to the Board's strategic planning. "Essentially, we are looking for someone with some financial background who can help contribute to our strategic planning," McKnight explains.

Community voices welcome

While the immediate focus is securing a Treasurer, McKnight encourages broader community interest in the Board. The Board meets approximately eight times per year, excluding summer months, allowing members to stay informed and guide the organization.

"The Treasurer will have a role in ensuring that we have resources and can expand to serve even more families here in the Community," McKnight highlights, adding that, "Even once we find the candidate for Treasurer, if being on the board would be something that would interest you, I still encourage you to fill out an application. That way, if we do have another board member who steps down, then it's easy for somebody else to jump into that role."

How to get involved

McKnight reassures potential applicants, especially those new to board service, that support and orientation are provided.

"There will be an orientation, and we have lots of supportive board members who are willing to provide that ongoing support and set you up for success," she says.
