Today is Tim Hortons Camp Day across Canada, a day where buying a coffee can make a world of difference for youth. For Weyburn resident Renee McDonald, one of this year's spokespersons, the day is a chance to give back to a program that shaped her life. Her journey with the camps began in 2008 as a camper, and she later returned for the Youth Leadership Program from 2012 to 2016.

Camp Day supports the Tim Hortons Foundation Camps, which help youth from underserved communities. Throughout the day today, 100 per cent of the proceeds from all hot and iced coffee sales are donated to the foundation, which sends kids to one of the six camps across the country at no cost to their families.

For McDonald, the impact of the camp was transformative.

“I personally went from being a super anxious fourth grader when I first attended to a very passionate early childhood educator now,” she shared. The experience provided more than just a summer getaway. It set the course for her future.

“The impact and positivity that I experienced from camp turned me into an outgoing, super passionate advocate for children and youth," McDonald explained. "Camp impacted my day-to-day life and my career field. And I just want to make the same impact that was made on my life.”

She recalls the experience teaching her invaluable lessons. A standout memory for her was the multi-day trips where she said she learned crucial life skills but also branched out to make connections and build friendships and gain skills that help her thrive today.

Weyburn residents can help support the Tim Hortons Foundation Camps by purchasing a hot or iced coffee today. They can also buy a special Camp Day donut, purchase a Camp Day bracelet, or ask to have the order rounded up to the nearest dollar. As well, donations can be made anytime through the Tim Hortons Foundation's Camps website.
