The Weyburn Police Service is reminding the community of water conservation efforts in effect during the summer. Deputy Chief Shane St. John notes that these measures are under the City of Weyburn Bylaw.
“I think people sometimes forget about it or aren't sure how it works. People can get a fine, usually it'd be a warning if someone's watering all the time when they're not supposed to be, you could get a fine. We don't want to see anyone get that so, it's better for everyone just to be aware of the by-law.”
The bylaw limits outdoor watering to designated days and times. Odd numbered houses may water on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, where even numbered houses may water on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. No watering is allowed within the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. ‘Waterless Wednesdays’ apply to all households.
St. John explains that while the bylaw officer is not patrolling for watering bylaw offenders, those over watering may be noted and reported to the WPS. The regulations not only protect the city’s treated water supply but also prevents service disruptions.
“She's very busy. If someone called that in, or she might notice it out there while she's on another call and let the neighbour know.”
“We expect people to pay attention to what they're doing when they're watering and respect the by-law.”
The City of Weyburn also thanks residents for their cooperation throughout additional conservation efforts laid out in June, while maintenance was underway at the Water Treatment Plant. Residents can keep track of their water usage using the EyeOnWater app.
