A quiet morning quickly turned chaotic in Portage la Prairie as police dealt with a flurry of thefts across the city within a matter of hours.

The first call came in just after 9 a.m. on July 8th when a business on Saskatchewan Ave. W. reported a theft. By the time officers arrived, the suspect was already gone, but surveillance footage gave them a good look at who they were dealing with.

Just as the officer was wrapping up that investigation, another call came in from Sissons Drive.

The officer responded and found the same suspect not far from the scene. A 26-year-old man with no fixed address was arrested and charged with two counts of theft under $5,000. He was later released with court-ordered conditions.

Shortly after, two more thefts were reported in the same area.

Officers arrested a 34-year-old man from Dakota Tipi First Nation in connection with those incidents. He was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and held overnight for a court appearance, before being released with conditions.

Later that afternoon, another business on Saskatchewan Ave. W. reported a theft involving two women who allegedly walked out without paying, but officers were able to track them down quickly.

A 17-year-old girl from Portage la Prairie and a 27-year-old woman from Sandy Bay First Nation were arrested and charged with possessing stolen property under $5,000. Both were released the following day on conditions set by the court.

With four suspects arrested in three separate incidents, quick response from police helped bring a busy day of crime to a close.
