Grizzly bears have been active in the Kananaskis area recently.
On Wednesday (July 16), Alberta Parks issued a Bear Warning for Lusk Creek, Stoney Creek Group Campground, and the U of C Barrier Lake Research Station, due to an adult grizzly bear in the area and in the cut blocks behind the U of C Research Station.
That was following the Bear Closure Alberta Parks issued for Commonwealth Valley and the surrounding area on July 15.
That closure was put in place due to multiple grizzly bears frequenting and feeding in the area.
While grizzlies have been reported in these areas, bears can be encountered anywhere in K-Country at any time.
To help avoid a surprise encounter with a bear, Alberta Parks is reminding people to keep all attractants, such as food, garbage, recycling, pet food, secure from bears, and never leave it unattended.
When hiking, make plenty of noise, travel in groups, be aware of your surroundings, look and listen for bears and their signs, keep pets leashed up, and carry bear spray in a way that it is easily accessible.
