It took two years, a lot of patience, and even a change in Alberta legislation — but Cochrane’s first Pedal Pub is finally ready to roll.
Lyle Thorsen, owner of Rocky View Brewing Company, says bringing the unique bike-powered pub experience to town wasn’t as simple as buying a bike and hitting the streets. “The town of Cochrane was really supportive,” says Thorsen, “but the stumbling block came with the AGLC liquor license regulations.”
As a brewery, Rocky View holds a manufacturing license, but Alberta’s regulations didn’t allow them to hold the additional license required for a moving, pedal-powered pub.
That sent Thorsen all the way to the Minister of Red Tape Reduction. “Minister Nally was really supportive,” he says. “We worked with the Alberta government and the AGLC to get the legislation changed — and as of July 2, the new rules are in place.”

Now, the Pedal Pub is gearing up to offer everything from party tours to local history rides in partnership with the Cochrane Historical Society.
And if you’re worried about the workout? “There’s a little e-assist on the bike,” laughs Thorsen, “so you can just sit back and enjoy the ride.”
The Pedal Pub is expected to hit the streets this August. For tour info, visit rockyviewbrewing.com.
