It was a day filled with joy, laughter, and reflection at Homestead South in Morden, as Vi Schroeder celebrated her 102nd birthday on July 18th. Surrounded by staff, friends, and her son Larry, the milestone was honoured with stories, music, and shared memories.

When asked what it feels like to be 102, Schroeder responded with her characteristic warmth: “It’s wonderful actually.”

Schroeder recalled her early life, growing up with four sisters. “There were five girls in the family and... it was exciting all the time.”

Although she’s now a proud Morden resident, Vi Schroeder and her son Larry shared they originated in Saskatoon, and spent many years in ministry out of B.C.

A life full of energy and faith

Despite reaching such an extraordinary age, Schroeder maintains a vibrant spirit. One story that stood out was her love for swimming. Vi swam across Morden Lake on her 90th birthday, and shared that she has done so many other times. Schroeder simply replied, “Yes, that’s right.”

When pressed about the secret to her longevity, Schroeder humbly said, “It’s just — I can’t explain it. It’s just exciting. Thank you.”

Her son Larry Schroeder reflected on her remarkable journey and health: “She really has [had good health]. And she doesn’t have health issues. She’s just old. She’s just getting old and tired.”

A family legacy

Larry also shared that Vi is the last living member of their immediate family. “Yeah, we’ve lost all of our family. There was three of us kids and my dad... he died 25 years ago and my youngest sister... passed away about six months after my dad and my younger brother died about 10 years ago.”

Still, the Reimer family line shows a history of longevity. “Most of [my dad’s family] died younger... but my mum’s side, all except for one, has made it into their 90s... There’s long genes in the Reimer family.”

Reflecting on his mother’s long life, Larry admitted, “I did not believe [she’d live this long]... It’s an amazing — it’s a God thing. The Lord has just blessed her with good health. And so we appreciate that.”

Still singing her favourite songs

When asked about her favourite gospel song, Schroeder was modest. “Oh my goodness. I have dozens of favorite songs.” With a little encouragement, Jayme Giesbrecht and Larry began to sing, “‘What a day that will be...’” prompting Schroeder to recall, and sing along

“102. That’s all I know,” Vi said with a laugh.

But one thing is certain: for those who know her, Vi Schroeder remains a remarkable woman with a sharp wit, deep faith, and a heart full of music.
