Airdrie Meals on Wheels hosted their first-ever Taste and Tell event on Sunday to showcase the type of meals their clients receive.

Several Airdrie dignitaries, members of other non-profit organizations and supporters of the organization attended the event and enjoyed the filling meal, exactly like what their clients would eat.

Lois Jones, media relations specialist with Airdrie Meals on Wheels, explained why they hosted this event.

"We wanted to host the event alongside Smitty's and show the community so they can understand that the food being delivered is prepared fresh daily, and is nutritious food, not frozen, not prepackaged, but cooked fresh daily."

According to their website, Airdrie Meals on Wheels is a non-profit society that has been committed since 1983 to providing individuals with nutritious, affordable meals, delivered to their door, five days a week, with extra meals available for the weekends. Individuals are always welcome, regardless of their income or whether they require short-term or long-term assistance.

Jones is thankful for the 40-50 people who attended the event and are sharing how the meal went.

Almost 100 per cent of donations that Meals on Wheels receives go towards subsidizing the cost of the meals. A small amount goes towards other items like technology, promotional handouts and office supplies. The organization does receive a grant from the provincial government, but that could change at any moment.

With the help of their beloved volunteers, Airdrie Meals on Wheels can:

  • Provide Affordable, nourishing meals.
  • Perform wellness checks.
  • Provide social interaction.
  • Allow for independence at home.
  • Delay / prevent the need for hospital visits or moves to assisted living facilities.

Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown, who was at the event, thanked everybody who works within the organization and makes what they do possible.

"They're not able to do the work every day that they do without the support of the community members, businesses and people who donate their time, in particular, volunteers. They're all rock stars. It's incredible, this community, we have so many people that give back."

All meals are provided by Desikan Cafe Catering, which is prepared daily out of the Airdrie Smitty's location.
