An Okotoks town councillor has announced she won't be seeking re-election this fall.

On Monday, July 21, Councillor Rachel Swendseid shared a post on social media announcing she will not be running in the upcoming municipal election for personal reasons.

"This was a difficult decision as I love this town dearly and serving this community has been an immense honor. However, I know that this decision is the next right thing for my young family and I," the post reads.

Swendseid highlighted several accomplishments from her term on council, including the introduction of fixed-route transit, the completion of the town's Social Needs Assessment and Strategy, and investments in recreation amenities such as a skate park on the south side.

She confirmed she will complete her four-year term, which ends when the next council is elected on Oct. 20.

"Even though I am not seeking re-election, I am still one of your elected officials until Oct. 20 when the next council is elected. Please keep sharing your concerns and feedback with me, and I’ll continue to bring your voice to the council table."
