A new outdoor recreational facility was officially welcomed last week in Wynyard.
The official grand opening for the Wynyard Community Disc Golf Park was held last week, located on the east side of town along Highway #16, next to the CO-OP C-Store.
Along with being the title sponsor of the park, Wynyard CO-OP hosted a barbecue. Volunteers from Disc Golf Sask were in attendance offering demonstrations to offer residents a chance to learn the techniques and the rules of the game.
Leisure Services Director Dana Stefanson explains the grand opening was a couple of years in the making.
“We started the project in the summer of 2023 with fundraising and the purchase of the baskets.”
The Rec Risers, a local fundraising group were able to purchase some baskets from the Jansen Disc Golf Club.
The baskets were installed late last summer along with tee markers. This year, the signage was completed to allow for the official grand opening.
Stefanson said there were 30 people who attended the grand opening last Thursday and noted that interest has picked up at the park.
“We're seeing more and more people out there throughout the summer here. I don't know that they're all local because it is kind of the perfect spot where people might even just see it and pull off the highway.”
She added that disc golf is an activity that has appealed to different residents.
“We had people of all ages really like parents with kids who were as young as four, all the way up to retired senior citizens who were out there playing. It’s really cool that it’s such an accessible sport for so many different age groups.”
Stefanson hopes to see the activity at the disc golf park continue.
“It's a free opportunity to get outside and have a bit of fun with your whole family, so we're looking forward to seeing people get involved.”
