Many in Okotoks and the greater Foothills community are mourning the loss of Madisson Cobb.
The 23-year-old Okotokian was fatally shot on July 19 in the southwest Calgary community of Haysboro.
Police have charged her ex-boyfriend, 26-year-old Devon Bradley Malik, with first-degree murder.
The Cobb family is well known in Alberta’s minor hockey community. Madisson’s father, Brad, is the head coach of the Okotoks Bisons and head scout for the Okotoks Oilers. Her brother, Hunter, plays for the Bisons.
A joint statement from the Okotoks Oilers, Okotoks Bisons, Okotoks Oilers Athletic Association, and Okotoks Oilers Minor Hockey was released Tuesday (July 22), expressing sadness and extending condolences to the Cobb family.
"Brad has long been a dedicated coach, mentor, and leader throughout all levels of hockey in Okotoks," the post reads. "Today, we stand
with him and his family, not just as hockey organizations, but as a united community - grieving alongside and offering our unwavering support to a
family facing an unthinkable tragedy."
Madisson’s online obituary highlights her love of travel, her Ophthalmic Assistant diploma from SAIT, her accomplishments as a swimmer, and her strong support for local hockey.
"Madisson had an infectious passion for life. She took great pride in her work at LASIK MD, where her energy and positivity made a lasting impact. One of her favourite pastimes was cheering on her dad and brother, Hunter, at the hockey rink—these moments became cherished memories she held close."
A celebration of life will be held at McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, 14441 Bannister Road SE in Calgary, on July 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
A tree will also be planted in her memory in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
