Rocky View County has surpassed $1 million in cumulative donations to STARS Air Ambulance, marking a major milestone in a partnership that spans more than three decades.

Since 1991, the municipality has made annual contributions to STARS, and in 2017, they adopted a per capita funding model of $2 per resident. In 2019, it became the first municipality in central and southern Alberta to earn its logo on a STARS helicopter.

The county marked the $1 million achievement during its annual Residents' Day, unveiling its logo on the cowling of a H145 aircraft—considered the most prestigious donor recognition location on STARS helicopters.

“As a rural municipality, we value STARS for their swift, expert medical response,” said Reeve Crystal Kissel. “This milestone represents lives saved and families supported.”

STARS handled 20 missions in the county in 2023 alone, and more than 400 since 2010.

The organization is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025, operating emergency air ambulance services from bases in six Western Canadian cities.

“Since 2010, STARS has flown over 400 missions in Rocky View County – five of these missions flown this year alone. It’s a clear reminder of how deeply their support affects the lives of their residents, neighbours, families and friends,” said Mike Lamacchia, Chief Operating Officer, Provincial Operations, STARS.

Rocky View County is one of more than 100 Alberta municipalities contributing to STARS through its Municipal Initiative Program.
