Estevan is getting ready for another round of baseball this weekend as the U18 AA Provincials make an appearance on the diamonds starting Friday. Mel Murray, the President of Estevan Minor Baseball, talks about the weekend and what we can expect from the teams coming to the area.
"This weekend here we got the 18U AA Provincials, which is the top eight teams in the AA League coming to Estevan."
That includes the 18U AA Estevan Brewers, who are heading into provincials as the #1 seed, with a record of 20-5.
Murray says the weekend will be loaded with baseball games that begin at the start of the weekend and run throughout.
"Starting Friday afternoon, one o'clock, there'll be two games, one at Panteluk Field, one at Petterson Field, and then we have the opening ceremonies at four o'clock, followed by two more games at 5:30, and then we start early Saturday morning at nine o'clock. Go all day Saturday, and on Sunday, we have the semi-finals and the finals."
The Estevan area hosted some other provincials last week, and these games managed to make it onto the diamonds despite some showers coming down.
Murray hopes to see the games this weekend once again dodging any potentially game-cancelling conditions.
"We have to get everything from Cactus (Park) moved up to Lynn Prime (Park), so we're ready to go just in case it rains like it did last weekend. But last weekend we got through in flying colors, and I think we'll do the same thing this weekend."
If Estevan ends up winning the event, there'll be more action for them as they move onto Westerns just as they did last year.
