Portage Minor Hockey is putting out a final call for early bird registration as the organization prepares for another exciting season on the ice. President Tanner Waldvogel says, families have until tonight to take advantage of reduced rates before a $200 late fee applies for U9 and up divisions.

"We just want to give everyone one last push to register so we can have our numbers set for the year," Waldvogel said. "Registration will stay open until the end of August, but it's a big help for planning if people register early."

Waldvogel, who has deep roots in the local hockey community as a former Portage Terrier, highlighted the ease of signing up. Parents can head to portageminorhockey.com and follow the links to Hockey Canada’s registration platform.

This season, Portage Minor Hockey will once again offer programs for all ages, starting with U7 'Learn to Play' for children ages four to six years old, all the way up to U15, depending on registration numbers.

"It's really about just getting them interested in it, getting them skating, and showing them how much fun, you can have being a part of a team," Waldvogel said. "We try to keep it as affordable as we can, especially for the younger age groups.

Looking ahead, excitement is also building around the anticipated reopening of the Koko Platz Community Rec Centre. Waldvogel confirmed the community is hopeful the rink will be ready this fall.

"The building is moving along pretty good," he noted. "We should be able to have some ice this year and get the outdoor rink going."

For Waldvogel, giving back to the game that shaped his youth is a personal mission.

"We do lots of fun stuff like, little tournaments, carnival days. It's all about making it fun and accessible for the kids."

Waldvogel also says that volunteers are always welcome, and youth sports can't run without that support. He says any board member can be reached out to if you want to volunteer or have any questions.
