The Perry Folk Award was presented on Thursday at the Weyburn Golf Club for 2024 and 2025 to two people whose names have been mentioned for the award over the years: Winston Bailey and Lyman Sergeant.
Kevin Folk explained the award isn't about how much volunteering the person does, or how many meetings they attend, but it's about their contributions to the social aspect of the clubhouse, all in line with the legacy of his late brother Perry.
Winston Bailey's name is engraved on the plaque for 2024, and Lyman Sergeant's is on for 2025.
"These names came up over the years, but you had to pick one, and that gets to be pretty hard," shared Kevin Folk. "I'm so happy that we can pick two to get these dates straight on the plaque."
He said that since they had been presenting the award sometime during the season for the previous year, they wanted to catch up with two awards this year, so next year's winner will be presented during the 2026 season.
As Folk noted, his contribution to keeping the 'Good Guy' award alive is to simply present it to the deserving people at the club.
"Perry Folk wasn't the only, you know, 'fun guy' out here," he explained. "Names are put forward by people who frequent here, staff members and other members. I talk to former winners about would they know anybody who would be a good candidate, and eventually, through discussion, we get somebody to honour. It's not too hard, actually. There are some names, like these guys' names, that have come up in so many previous years."
Bailey, whose son Chad Bailey won the award in 2010, said he enjoys the social aspect of golf, even though the game can be frustrating at times.
"It's just to be around a bunch of people that have a common interest, and it doesn't matter how good you are, it really doesn't, and you just go out and have fun."
Bailey said winning this award is "an honour."
Folk said Lyman Sergeant is a witty guy, and most of his jokes have to do with a shot that just happened. He also said Sergeant is the 'most like Perry' of any recipient of the award.
"I think that it's a great honour to be like Perry. He was a good guy. Fun to be around and the Clubhouse MVP, it's just the way Perry was. He liked everybody."
The plaque was created and is added to each year by Al York of York Jewellers in Weyburn, and each year the recipients receive a $100 gift certificate for Pumpjacks Saloon & Steakhouse by owner Shannon Lindsey, who was a friend of Perry Folk.
