Brandon Police Officer And École Secondaire Neelin High School First Responders were inducted into Order of the Buffalo Hunt today at Brandon City Hall.

Premier Wab Kinew awarded one of Manitoba’s highest honours, the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, to Const. Moshe Linov of the Brandon Police Service and the École Secondaire Neelin High School first responders following a violent incident that struck at the heart of a place meant to be safe.

“In a moment when the duty to keep people safe called, these first responders stepped up,” said Kinew. “They didn’t just save the life of Chinonso Onuke, they gave a frightened school community something even more powerful – the reassurance that even in our toughest moments, we are not alone. Today, we honour their bravery and their humanity.”

Linov, alongside other École Secondaire Neelin High School first responders, were inducted into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt following a ceremony held today at Brandon City Hall.

At approximately 1:15 PM on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 11th, Brandon Police Service officers responded to an emergency at Neelan High School involving 2 male youths. The School Liaison Officer had received a call from one of the students that a male had been acting erratically with a sword in the hallway. The Liaison Officer immediately alerted BPS.  Officers arrived within minutes at 1:18 PM and by 1:22 PM a 16-year-old male suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

The 15-year-old victim sustained injuries to his chest, arms and thighs and was provided immediate medical attention and transferred to Brandon Regional Hospital.

Established in 1957, Manitoba’s Order of the Buffalo Hunt is accompanied by a certificate of membership, signed by the premier and sealed with the Great Seal of Manitoba.

The Order of the Buffalo Hunt was recently conferred upon the first responders from the Carberry tragedy.

'I have no doubt, that the preparatory, deliberate, emergency planning with Brandon School Division, the established relationship between our School Liaison Officers and students at Neelin High School and the speedy response of Brandon Police Service members on the date in question prevented mass casualty,' states Brandon Police Chief Tyler Bates on June 20th.
