A manhunt is underway in Portage la Prairie after a suspect escaped from police custody Thursday evening.

According to Manitoba RCMP, the Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MNFPS) reported around 9:00 p.m. on July 24 that a man they had arrested earlier in the day had managed to flee.

Last seen on 5th Street SE

The suspect, 26-year-old Byron Roulette of Winnipeg, was last seen at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the 500 block of 5th Street Southeast in Portage.

At the time, Roulette was shirtless, handcuffed, and wearing grey-brown shorts. Authorities also note he had visible blood stains on his shoes.

The RCMP is warning the public not to approach the individual if seen and to call 911 immediately.

Heavy police presence in the area

A large number of officers from both MNFPS and the Manitoba RCMP were in the vicinity of 5th Street SE and Queens Avenue as the search continues.

“Specialized units are also assisting in the search, including Manitoba RCMP Police Dog Service (PDS) and the RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS),” notes the RCMP in a media release.

The RCMP is asking residents in and around Portage la Prairie to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.

Those with information are encouraged to contact 911, Portage la Prairie RCMP at (204) 857-4445, or MNFPS at (204) 843-7700.
