SaskPower has released its quarterly report, discussing the temporary shutdown of Boundary Dam's Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) unit and the subsequent results from its second quarter, lasting from April 1st to June 30th.

Over that period, the CCS facility at Boundary Dam Power Station was available 11.78 per cent of the time, capturing 25,443 tonnes of CO2. While it was turned on, the facility saw a daily average capture rate of 2,346 tonnes over the quarter, with a peak one-day capture of 2,514 tonnes. The resulting emissions intensity was 471 tonnes of carbon dioxide per gigawatt hour.

The lower output was a result of planned overhauls for Boundary Dam's Unit 3 and the CCS facility that started on April 11. The following was worked on by SaskPower:

  • Packing changes in the SO2 and CO2 absorber towers and in the SO2 stripper tower,
  • Refurbishment of the CO2 compressor motor and the CO2 compressor itself was disassembled, inspected and reassembled,
  • Refurbishment of the cooling tower,
  • Numerous heat exchanger cleans,
  • Other general maintenance and repair activities.

An in-depth inspection was also undertaken for the CO2 pipeline for the first time since commissioning in 2014.

The CCS facility and BD3 have fully returned to service and resumed carbon capture as of July 8.
