When you are learning how to drive, there are a number of key things you learn. You learn about yielding to pedestrians. You learn about when to turn on a red light. And you learn about uncontrolled intersections. Or, you should have.
There must have been something in the water the last few days. Yesterday in particular, aside from stopping prior to an individual on my left at a 4 way stop, and having them gun it to go first, I was almost hit twice at uncontrolled intersections, because choosing to yield to the person on your right is too much work.
There is no winning when you the person that is actually in the right, ON the right at uncontrolled intersections. If you choose to go, as you have the right too given traffic laws, you risk getting hit. If you honk, because the person does not slow down or yield, you are the jerk that bothered someone else. All the while, you are just trying to follow what you learned when you were 14/15/16 years old. This is especially concerning when you have other people in the vehicle, be it children, friends or family and are also responsible for their safety when you're behind the wheel.
I don't know that there is an easy solution, as anyone who doesn't choose to yield or pay attention to those laws will never think they're in the wrong if an accident were to occur. For me, I'll just imagine my old driving instructor Bill Martens slamming his foot on the brake while I was also learning, and letting me know in a stern yet jovial manner, "You can't do that!" Maybe we need more of that. GPS already knows where you are, it should start connecting to your vehicle camera so Siri can yell "You can't do that!" if you're about to blow through an intersection. A thought, anyways.
