The Siksika Nation Tribal Administration has released a statement regarding the fatal hit-and-run that claimed the lives of two Siksika Nation members and left another with serious injuries on July 26.
The letter from the Office of Ohkinniinaa and Niinaaks states that Siksika Nation is working with the Gleichen RCMP to gather all relevant facts surrounding the incident. The statement emphasizes that the investigation is active and ongoing, and that all efforts are being made to ensure it is conducted thoroughly and respectfully.
"We understand that there is a great deal of concern and interest surrounding this matter," the statement reads. "However, due to the sensitive nature of the incident, and to preserve the integrity of the investigation, we are unable to release specific details at this moment."
According to the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit, police responded to the scene at 9:30 p.m., where two people were declared deceased and another was found in critical condition.
Investigators have determined that five people were walking when a vehicle struck three of them and then fled the scene.
Siksika Nation is urging the public to remain respectful as the investigation continues.
"We respectfully ask for the public’s patience and understanding as this process unfolds," the statement reads. "Speculation and the spread of unverified information can cause unnecessary distress, especially to those directly impacted. We urge everyone to allow space and privacy for the individuals and families involved as they navigate this incredibly difficult time."
Siksika Nation leadership says they remain committed to transparency and will provide updates as soon as they are able to do so responsibly.
No further details have been released at this time.
