Summer exhibitions at the Weyburn Art Gallery are still drawing crowds, but work is well underway for the fall exhibition, and the Weyburn Arts Council will be looking at some big events as well. From an immersive new installation at the gallery to a nearly month-long celebration of culture, and a call for artists for one of the most popular events in the winter, the local arts scene is going to be busy for the coming months.

Starting in mid-September, Culture Days will take over the city. Regan Lanning, the City of Weyburn curator and arts coordinator, is expecting it to be busy throughout the community with a variety of activities on the go.

“Culture Days is coming up in September, and I have about 20 events planned for that month,” said Lanning as she looked ahead to the community-wide arts initiative.

At the Weyburn Art Gallery, the first major exhibition for the season will be works by two Regina artists. Featuring 100 pottery hearts installed on the gallery walls, the visual aspect will be accompanied by a unique soundscape.

"I love combining the two and creating an immersive atmosphere,” Lanning shared. “This exhibition will be really neat.”

It is expected that the installation will open shortly after the two current exhibits – The Great Weyburn Pottery Throwdown and Atim Maskikhiy – end their runs in the gallery.

Fresh off the heels of what was considered a successful Gifted Art Market in Jubilee Park earlier this month, the plans are already underway for the winter edition of the market.

“Registration for our Winter Gifted is now open,” said Lanning, noting that the arts community in Weyburn is non-stop. “As soon as one door closes, the next one opens.”

Details for the registration are available on the Weyburn Art Gallery/Weyburn Arts Council Facebook page

Ahead of the fall season, though, there are still a number of events happening. The aforementioned Great Weyburn Pottery Throwdown is on display until the end of September, and Atim Maskikhiy (Dog Medicine) until the end of August. As well, the Get Out Gallery, featuring the works of Lorena Squires, is underway in River Park in Weyburn.
