The latest Estevan Fire Rescue report sheds light on some of their latest calls in the community and how crews have been faring with wildfires up north.
On July 21, at around 8:30 p.m., a request was received from a home Northeast of the city to investigate a possible gas leak. The on-call duty officer responded with gas detection equipment and found that no gas levels were detected, but a gas smell was present. SaskEnergy was then requested to help the owner further troubleshoot the issue.
July 23 saw crews dispatched to a commercial fire alarm at around 5:20 p.m. in the Southeast area of the city. Crews responded and found no emergency occurring, with the alarm due to cleaning being performed on site. Crews reset the fire alarm and returned to the station.
Crews were dispatched on July 24 at around 10:00 p.m. for a vehicle vs deer collision Northeast of the city. They responded and assisted with no reported injuries as the vehicle suffered enough damage that it needed to be towed from the scene.
Crews were on the scene July 25 around 8:40 p.m. for a field fire Northwest of the city. After responding, crews found a small fire occurring in a pasture field, quickly extinguishing the fire without incident. The cause of the fire was believed to be weather-related from a storm that went through the area at the time.
Fire Chief Rick Davies also provided an update on the EFR members who were sent north to fight wildfires.
Estevan Fire Rescue’s 1st Northern deployment ended on Saturday, July 26th. Lieutenant Justin Herod, Firefighter Austin Dovell and Firefighter Colby Wainman returned from Patuanak late Saturday night with Fire Engine 301D.
The SPSA put in a request for a second deployment by EFR to Patuanak to continue supporting that area. On Saturday morning, Lieutenant Tyler Stead, Firefighter Nathan Rae and Deputy Chief Kyle Luc travelled to Patuanak with a Wildland truck and a Tanker truck. Firefighter Nolan LaCoste has remained in Patuanak to keep working with the 2nd crew.
EFR will continue to work with SPSA, and if needed, a crew change will be performed next weekend.
