SaskEnergy is alerting residents of the southeast that they will be conducting some flaring at a well soon, with flames likely to be visible.

The controlled natural gas flaring will be taking place at a TransGas station site located within the RM of Lomond, west of Highway 35, approximately five kilometres northeast of the hamlet of Colgate.

Flaring will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, subject to change based on operating requirements.

Anyone passing near the site is likely to see a 40-foot flame being emitted from the flare stack temporarily attached to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure.

Flaring is a necessary process as workers perform maintenance work on the natural gas line system in the area, supporting the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to SaskEnergy’s customers.

During this process, a portion of the gas line is isolated from the system and natural gas is removed from the line in a controlled burn called a flare. Flaring is an industry standard practice, and reduces the carbon footprint of the vented natural gas by 85 per cent.

SaskEnergy will be supervising the area around the flare to ensure public safety, with service unaffected for local residents.

The RM of Lomond and the local 737 Volunteer Fire Department have already been notified of the upcoming flaring.
