August is just around the corner, and that means another month chock-full of activities for all ages at the Moose Jaw Public Library (MJPL).

There’s the library’s regular summer programming, of course, including weekly Magic the Gathering sessions, the Maker Saturday program, as well as Storytime in the Park, Come and Go Play!, and the MJPL Movie Club, just to name a few.

That’s not all, however, as there are a trio of back-to-back special programs coming up August 7-9.

Kicking things off on Thursday, August 7, is Fun with Food & Farming, a hands-on collaborative program with the Mosaic Community Food Farm. Children age four and up will be introduced to the smells, tastes, and textures of local seasonal vegetables.

“They’re going to get to plant their own plant,” said Naiomi Setter, MJPL public service and social media clerk.

“It’s a fun little program! Last year it was really popular, and the kids all loved it.”’

Up next, on Friday, August 8, is a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog who will conduct a fire safety workshop alongside the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.

“They’re going to do a kid-friendly presentation on fire safety and we invite anybody who’s got kids — and their caregivers — to come and spend the hour with Sparky,” said Setter, who hinted that there may even be another special guest in attendance.

Each child will also receive a Sparky-themed fire hat and an activity booklet of their own to take home with them.

The flurry of activity concludes with guest instructors from Nanan STEM Academy and Workshop on Saturday, August 9, who are offering kids aged 8 to 13 an opportunity to dive into computer science, robotics and coding.

“This has always been a really popular program,” said Setter.

“We’ve had it for a couple of years now, and normally this would be a paid program if you were to register outside the library, but we’re offering it for free.”

She added that pots are limited, but those interested can register by visiting the MJPL website.
