Even though the final days of July are forecasted to be warm, Foothills County has had a particularly wet month.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada scientist Christy Climenhaga, this has been one of the wettest Julys in Calgary-area history.
"It has been a very cool run, and we're starting to finally get back into some warmer weather," Climenhaga said. "Temperatures looking to jump back up towards the higher 20s for the end of the week, hotter a little further north, but it looks like in the Okotoks area, you should be, kind of, in that 27 degree range."
That’s about four or five degrees above normal.
However, the weather is expected to change again by the weekend, with more rain on the way.
"I know it's a long weekend, so the timing, of course, is not as ideal as many would like. We're seeing a wide low-pressure system building over Alberta, which will bring with it some rainfall. Pretty convective rain, that showery kind of rain that can be heavier at times and lighter, and looking at quite a bit of variation in terms of amounts. It's a little early to say exactly how much we'll get in Okotoks," she explained.
Climenhaga says Saturday will be soggy, and showery weather will likely stick around for the rest of the weekend.
"Another round of rain on top of an already very rainy July. It looks like we’re starting August on a rainier note as well."
How rainy has it been in the Foothills this July?
Even with a couple of days left in the month, the area has already received roughly 150 mm more rain than usual.
"Just to put things in perspective, for July, you typically see about 46.8 millimetres of precipitation. So far in Okotoks- we're missing some data from the past couple of days, so we might be underestimating a bit- the total is sitting at 195.6 millimetres of rainfall."
In Calgary, 162.1 millimetres of rain have been recorded this month.
While this is a substantial amount, it’s not the rainiest July on record.
"I'm going off of Calgary's numbers, because the records are a little more complete, but the rainiest July in the Calgary area was 1927, where you got 254.4 millimetres of rain. Second place, 2016 at 206.1 millimetres."
