A young soccer player playing in the High River Minor Soccer Association could be cast in an ad.

According to Tony Walker, his son Mason is part of the Youth Athlete of the Year competition that will see the winner in a Sports Illustrated ad.

"Mason's been well involved in soccer over the years, and for a 12-year-old, he's overdeveloped for his age. Like, he plays with older kids." Walker explains. "There was an opportunity to be a nomination for this contest, and they only take so many nominations."

Mason is in currently in a group of 50 for this contest, and is the only one from the Foothills.

How this contest works is that people are able to place a vote for the person they wish to see win every 24 hours.

At the end of this voting round, only 20 will move on, and then only 15 will move on after that round, and so on.

"What part of the prize is, is they get an ad, because it's sponsored by this sports clothing company called 3 Brand, and so, you would be basically wearing their gear in an ad for Sports Illustrated. Part of that also is they get a $25,000 scholarship towards their sports education."

Mason has been playing soccer since he was three, and it has become his passion and joy.

Voting for this contest began on Monday and voting for this round closes Aug. 7.
