A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for a large part of southern Alberta.

Environment Canada issued the Watch, because the conditions are favourable to develop severe thunderstorms, which could produce large hail, wind, and heavy rain from late this afternoon to early this evening.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for:

Kananaskis Improvement District near Highwood House, Alta. (071540)
Foothills Co. near Priddis and Brown-Lowery Prov. Park, Alta. (072521)
Foothills Co. near Diamond Valley, Alta. (072522)
Foothills Co. near Longview and Eden Valley Res., Alta. (072523)
Foothills Co. near Okotoks and De Winton, Alta. (072531)
Foothills Co. near High River and Aldersyde, Alta. (072532)
Foothills Co. near Cayley, Alta. (072533)
M.D. of Willow Creek near Nanton and Parkland, Alta. (072541)
M.D. of Willow Creek near Claresholm and Stavely, Alta. (072542)
   M.D. of Ranchland, Alta. (073110)
M.D. of Pincher Creek near Cowley Burmis and Maycroft, Alta. (073120)

As Environment Canada reminds us, when the thunder roars, head indoors, as lighting injures and kills Canadians annually.

Environment Canada is also tracking a severe thunderstorm 30 kilometres west of Diamond Valley, which is capable of producing strong wind gusts and toonie sized hail, along with heavy rain.

This storm is moving southward at 15 km/hour.

Heavy rain could cause flash flooding and significant reduction in visibility.

Large hail could cause damages or injuries, so Environment Canada encourages people to take cover immediately if a thunderstorm approaches.

Also, if outside during a thunderstorm, protect yourself from flying debris, and don't drive down a flooded road.
